Why Jewish Lives?

LEON D. BLACK
“I think there is a hunger for books that zero in on the fascinating questions at the core of the Jewish experience, whether secular or religious.”

LEON D. BLACK
Leon D. Black Foundation

Leon Black, whose foundation has underwritten this project, was first inspired by a question put forth by one of his sons about the meaning of Jewish identity, and believes that the Jewish Lives book series can increase our understanding of what it means to be Jewish. As has said, "I think there is a hunger for books that zero in on the fascinating questions at the core of the Jewish experience, whether secular or religious. And the spectrum of lives that will be included in this project is astonishing -- defining figures in literature, religion, philosophy, politics, cultural and economic life, as well as the arts and sciences. I see this library of biography as a powerful opportunity for Jewish families, congregations, schools, and general readers to enrich with pride their understanding of Jewish life through history. "

JEWISH LIVES - 2014 BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD - FROM THE JEWISH BOOK COUNCIL

The Jewish Book Council "bestowed the honor of 2014 Jewish Book of the Year upon a series for the first time in its history. The decision to honor Yale University Press's Jewish Lives series, a series which illuminates the lives of great figures in Jewish history, came four years into its publication in recognition of its achievements thus far and its forthcoming contributions for years to come. JBC seeks to highlight and applaud the publisher, Yale University Press in collaboration with the Leon D. Black Foundation, for taking on this important task as well as show support for the endeavor and continue to nurture an audience for works that share the stories and people behind our collective history."
